The RWPPI convened its 7th regular meeting on June 26, 2001. Before the discussion of the agenda, Masao Sugimoto, Ph.D., Pioneer Corporation's Executive Corporate Engineering Advisor, was re-elected as General Secretary of RWPPI by the members. He has served in this role since May 2000.
Four prestige companies, Plannet Associate Co.Ltd., Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Daewoo Electronics Co., Ltd., and SKC Co., Ltd. were announced as new members of RWPPI, bringing the total number of memberships to 46.
After the introduction of the new members, reports were made by the media and hardware subcommittee members on the levy system in Europe and DVD player designs for improving playback compatibility. This was followed by a presentation of Pioneer's DVR-7000 (to be launched in late July).
The regular meeting was concluded with two lectures: 1) "How Matsushita deals with DVD recorder business" was spoken by Sakon Nagasaki, Matsushita Electric Industrial's Director of Storage Device Business Development Office. And 2) "Latest trends in the broadcasting industry" was presented by Haruo Okuda, Japan Broadcasting Corporation's Director of Science & Technical Research Laboratories. The second lecture was based on what was originally presented in May 2001 during the Labs' exhibition.
