Memorial for the late Dr. Masao Sugimoto, RWPPI General Secretary; Mr. Koki Aizawa inaugurated as new General Secretary; LEAD DATA INC.
and MJC (SINGAPORE) PTE LTD welcomed as new members; DVD-RW Defect Management technical report; technical demonstration of a new
semiconductor product related to DVD recording.
RWPPI's 17th General Meeting was held on February 18th.
As the meeting commenced, members observed a moment of silence in honor of the late Dr. Sugimoto, who had served as General Secretary since RWPPI's founding, and viewed a memorial video. Vice-General Secretary Aramoto (Vice-President, Sharp Corp.) gave a memorial address, after which he nominated Pioneer Executive Officer, and Deputy General Manager of External Relations Division, KOKI AIZAWA to be the new General Secretary of RWPPI.
The nomination of Mr. Aizawa was unanimously approved. Mr. Aizawa gave an address in which he stated his intention to work aggressively on RWPPI activities,
continuing the work of the late Dr. Sugimoto.

The meeting then moved on to general issues. Two new members were admitted: LEAD DATA INC., and MJC (SINGAPORE) PTE LTD. LEAD DATA INC.
presented an address introducing their company. The Hardware and Media Working Groups released a report. The RWPPI Secretariat reported on the WCES
exhibition and the progress of plans for Round Robin Testing (Stage-2), which began this spring.
The meeting continued with the latest DVD recording semiconductor being introduced by SANYO Electronics Co., Ltd. and ASAHI KASEI MICROSYSTEMS
CO., LTD. A technical lecture on DVD-RW defect management was given by Mr. Tanigawa, the Chairman of the Mt. Fuji Group, which is the institution
responsible for establishing international standards for the command set used between PCs and drives.
Critic Mr. Reiji Asakura delivered a special guest lecture, entitled "The Latest Trends in Digital AV, from WCES 2003". He provided a detailed account of
WCES, drawing on a large amount of material collected during his coverage of the event.
