The 34th General Meeting was held (December 7, 2005)


Welcoming Giant Base Technology as a New Member;
New DVD Recorders Introduction by 3 Companies;
Special Lecture by Mr. Fujiwara, President of Fujiwara-Rothchild; etc...


The 34th RWPPI General Meeting was held on December 7th, at the Sharp Corporation office building in Makuhari. This time, we welcomed "Giant Base Technology" as the newly joined member to total 69 RWPPI member companies.


The meeting started with the speech by Mr. Aizawa, the Representative of RWPPI. He reflected on RWPPI activities for year 2005 with the member companies. "There were 6 General Meetings, with member joint promotions in the U.S.A., Germany, China, and Turkey, successfully appealing the superiority of the DVD-RW and DVD-R recording formats worldwide. Especially please take note of the great success in exploiting our promotions in a new territory as Turkey in September at CeBIT, and wide appeals of our Round Robin Test activities at the seminars in Taiwan. Also through our active Joint Round Robin Tests with the RDVDC in checking to enhance compatibility progress at each working levels, we were greatly able to contribute technical developments as well as to popularize the media and hardware worldwide." The speech ended with strong convictions for the continued success of RWPPI together with the member companies.

In continuation, the Vice Representative Mr. Aramoto made his speech by adding that again this year in the Japanese market, we may see dynamic sales increases in DVD recorders. This may further be influenced by the spread of Digital Terrestrial Broadcasts, giving a type of multiplier effect attributing more to contributing developments in the industry.

In continuation to the Vice Representative's speech, Mr. Yamamoto of Ongen Publishing Company in relation to the Web collaboration with RWPPI explained about their popular audio visual portal site "Phile-Web," and cooperation with RWPPI.
"Phile-Web" developed through the link with their company's magazine "Senka 21," with daily hits exceeding 2,500,000 as a mega portal site. He introduced how this site is beneficial as useful information to the users, with more detailed information available at the premium members club, striving to make it ever more popular for the visitors as its policy.

Next, Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, and Pioneer Corporation made their presentations of their new DVD Recorders introduced into the market for the year-end season.

First, Mr. Iwasaki of Sharp Corporation started with the introduction of their "Aquos High Vision Recorder" series and its features. Features of the new high vision recording technology "T3" engine installed for high quality recording, equipped with double digital terrestrial tuners in models "DV-ARW15 / ARW-12", and "one-shot start up" function in 1 second from stand-by position with actual demonstration was made.

This was followed by the introduction of Sony Corporation's new features of the "Sugoroku" DVD Recorder series by Mr. Kinoshita. "RDZ-D90 / D70 / D50" high vision compatible models with "Auto recording & learning" superior feature functions integrated with "x-omakase / maruroku" (Automated dependability), along with the easy editing capability of digital camera stills for slide show creation with the "x-Pict Story HD" feature. Actual demonstrations of these features with their unique and smooth "XMB (cross bar)" GUI and remote control operability were shown as well, making even more appealing demonstrations with the PSP connection capability and its possible functions.

Mr. Watanabe of Pioneer Corporation made the last demonstration of the new DVD Recorder introduction for their "Sugureko" and "Prive" series. The Sugureko "DVR-DT90 / 70" model series are the company's first digital terrestrial tuner equipped recorders, positioned as its high-end models for high quality pictures, and world's first to make use of single-sided Dual Layer DVD-R disc recording. Easy operations with "Keyword Search/Keyword Timer Recording, New Program Search, and Rough Genre Search" functions were explained. Automatic timer recording compatibility with mobile phones • PC, with many other features for the whole family members to enjoy were mentioned. The demonstration of the "DVR-DT90" in pursuing easier use and superior character viewing with high vision quality and EPG recording operation was made. For the "Prive" series "DVR-330H," it was explained as the model targeted to ladies in their 20s and 30s for personal use, placing emphasis on design concept, simplicity of use, and extremely compact size with excellent playback compatibility.

As the last topic for the meeting, the special lecture by the President, Mr. Takutoshi Fujiwara of Fujiwara-Rothchild Ltd. on "Paradigm Shift and Present/Future of Optical Storage Industry" was made.

In Mr. Fujiwara's lecture, he discussed on how the paradigm shift is brought onto the optical disc industries with current issues influenced by the growth of flash memory cards as a recordable media, and the spread of on-line contents to revolutionize package media through his unique style of analysis. He emphasized the urgent need to create the infrastructure starting with the BH/HD DVD as the new generation package media for the optical storage industries, while keeping close watch of how the role of the PC drive and game device PS3 will influence. He ended his speech by saying that although we will be entering times of drastic changes, he encouraged the RWPPI members attending today to sustain our current business, and wishing for the successful shift on to the next business. This ended with great applause from the members to close meeting.
