4)
Special Lecture by Dr. Takuo Tanaka of RIKEN, Kawada Nanophotonics Laboratory, on "Challenges for mass storage optical discs: Prospects for 3 Dimensional Recording."

The meeting started with the speech by the Representative, Mr. Aizawa saying: "With the recent sales release of the new Windows Vista, we may finally enjoy DVD-RW/R support in which repurchasing movements for such PCs will further enhance DVD-RW/R needs for the PC world."

Next, the presentation by Mr. Ishii (of Pioneer Corporation), the head chair of the Round Robin Tests summarized the results report for the Stage 6 tests. Of all the manufacturers that participated in this test, the worldwide market coverage of optical discs was: 100% for DVD-R Dual Layer, 88.4% for DVD-R Single Layer, 96.8% for DVD-RW, and 96.6% coverage by DVD Writers. From such figures, Mr. Ishii emphasized how highly effective and efficient it is to participate in these Round Robin Test activities.

In continuation, the result reports were then presented in detail by each of the Working Group' s Chair or Co-Chairmen, along with very satisfying results. In particular, the Physical Format WG improved their results against the previous test using practical data; reporting actual quality improvements achieved by the participating members.

This was then followed with the presentation by Mr. Saito (the RWPPI Secretary Office) regarding plans to announce these latest Round Robin Test Results. The first is scheduled to be held at the "4th JRT Tokyo Seminar" on Feb. 23rd jointly with the RDVDC (Recordable DVD Council), which will then be followed by "The 4th Taiwan Seminar" held under the auspices of TRIA (The Taiwan Recording-Media Industries Association) and RWPPI in early March.

Next, the outline explanation of the new standard in progress by the DVD Forum regarding "CSS Recording on DVD-R for Video Downloading" was presented by Mr. Yoshida of the Home System Development Center of Pioneer Corporation. 2 types of business models: MOD (for recording and sales through Kiosks or Record Shops), and the CST (General user download recordings onto DVD-R discs through their PC at home) were introduced. He presented how both businesses showed high growth potentials, focusing on the merits for contents holders, Retailers, and end-users.

After the Intermission, the Special Lecture by Dr. Tanaka of RIKEN, Kawada Nanophotonics Laboratory on the topic: "Challenges for mass storage optical discs - Prospects for 3 Dimensional Recording" was made. Dr. Tanaka explained how he applied the concept of microscopic technology for optical storage discs, creating multi-layers for storage, to realize mass volumes in storage. He ended his speech mentioning his final dream of "Achieving to preserve 80 years of one' s life recordings in the space of 1 cubic cm of light memory in 8 pieces." The attendees listened with great interest in this lecture, ending with a strong applause.
