Representative, Mr. Koki Aizawa opened the meeting with a speech highlighting the importance of the Round-Robin Tests.He mentioned the need for similar activities in the future for the systems utilizing the blue laser recording & playback technologies.

Vice Representative Mr. Shigeru Chiba (Director of Sharp Corporation Technology HQ, Advanced Imaging Technology Research Center), speaking on a topic related to "Digital Broadcasting Day"December 1, announced that the penetration rate of digital broadcasting receivers had risenand would get fully underway hereon. This will require more product development incorporating user viewpoints.

With regard to the disc package labelling of HD contents recording onto the DVD-RW/R discs, RWPPI submittedthe guideline proposal to the Japan Recording-Media Industries Association (JRIA). As a result, the Secretariat reported thatat present, the matter was to be implimented independently by each disc manufacturer's decision. From the point of RWPPI, it is strongly desirable that each disc manufacturer make its best efforts to follow this guideline as much as possible on all of their products.

The Secretariat then presented a briefing on the Round Robin Test seminar plans. The seminars will be held on the 14th or 15th of February in Tokyo and on the 21st of February in Taipei, Taiwan.The technical meeting at ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute) is planned for the 22nd of the same monthin Hsinchu, Taiwan.

The Secretariat reported on the visit to Japan on the 25th of October by theAudio-Video Association of China, Committee of the Optical-disc and related Chinese government representatives.  There was a request from the JRIA, their reception point on the Japanese side, for a visit to the RWPPI regardingthe topic of optical disc quality improvement. That day, there was an introduction to the RWPPI Round Robin Test activitiesat Pioneer Electronic Corporation, and an introduction/tour of a Verification Class A Laboratory. The Chinese Delegationvoiced their profound appreciation, acknowledging the usefulness of their visit.

Next, Secretary General, Mr. John Wu gave a report on the activities of RWPPI and the Taiwan Recording Media Industry Association, which has a cooperative relationship with the RWPPI. He explained the results of the cooperation in the past Round Robin Test seminars in Taiwan, and the concept of the same seminar scheduled for February of next year.

Mr. Kenichirou Ootsuki of KDDI gave a detailed presentation on the "DVD Burning" download business. It involves delivering the content in the VR format, which uses CPRM for copyright protection, and recording it on a DVD-RW disc. There was an explanation of the actual web and a play back demo of the DVD-RW disc, followed by talk on the development of aggressive promotions in the future.

Lastly, Mr. Tomohiko Komatsu, CEO of The BOC Group, an optical disc market research company, gave a talk entitled"Current situation and future prospects of the optical data storage industry: The Red Scenario". As such it wasa talk highlighting the future trends of the discs related to red laser recordings and playback. Mr. Komatsu pointed out that although the Year Over Year red optical disc shipment volume is currently falling, HD recording and various applications such as DVD downloads are appearing. He hinted on the potential for more such activity in the future.
