Q1. What is the difference between video mode and VR mode?
A.

Video mode is a mode where the recording is done in the same format as commercially available DVD videos. It is finalized after recording and can play back with most DVD players. A VR mode is a mode that is easy to edit after recording. If the program is recorded on a DVD-RW disk in VR mode, it is easy to delete the commercials or other unnecessary episodes or even switch the order of the scenes. Please refer to your device manual regarding the playback compatibility of disks recorded in video or VR modes.

Q2. Are disks recorded in video mode and disks recorded in VR mode playback compatible?

A.
Please refer to your device manual regarding the playback compatibility of disks recorded in video or VR modes. When recorded disks are played back with a different device from what it was recorded in, the disk must be finalized.

Q3. Can video mode and VR mode be combined into one disk?

A.
Two different recording modes cannot be combined into one disk. The recording mode must be determined for each disk. Only DVD-RW and DVD-R disks support theses two modes.

Q4. What is initialization?

A.
Initialization is to prepare the disk so that the data can be recorded. New DVD-RW and DVD-R disks must be initialized to make recordings. Either video or VR mode must be selected when initializing. Particularly, the user must initialize prior to recording in a VR mode. Please refer to your device manual on how to initialize.

Q5. What does “finalize” mean?

A.
Finalize refers to the process conducted to the recorded disk so that it can play back on other devices. When the recorded disk is played back onto other devices, the disk must be finalized. Please refer to your device manual on how to finalize.

Q6. Can VR mode be recorded onto DVD-R disks?

A.
There are devices that can make VR recordings. Please refer to your device manual or ask your device manufacturer.

Q7. Is there a disk where both sides can be recorded onto DVD-RW and DVD-R disks?

A.
Both 12cm and 8cm disks are sold by the disk manufacturers. Please ask each disk manufacturer regarding the specific product.

Q8. Is it possible to edit a television program recorded onto DVD-R disks?

A.
It is possible to edit DVD-R disks recorded in VR mode, however, the recording function differs according to the recorder. (Some models can edit DVD-R disks recorded in video mode.) Please refer to your device manual regarding the specific editing function.。

Q9. Is there a regional code (regional restrictions in replay) in DVD-RW or DVD-R disks similar to the commercially sold DVD-Video disks?

A.
Recordable DVD disks do not have regional codes such as DVD-Video disks. Therefore, the recorded disk can be played back in any region of the world if the broadcasting system (NTSC/PAL) agrees to your television and DVD device.

Q10. What is the difference between EP mode, SP mode, and LP mode?

A.
EP, SP and LP modes refer to the recording time (SP is standard and EP is three fold) of VHS videos. When recording with a DVD, the relationship between the recording time and picture quality depend on the how the disk capacity is utilized.
For good picture quality the recording should be done in XP or SP mode whereas for longer recordings, the mode should be set under LP. The recording time is shortened when high quality images are recorded but long recordings are possible if it doesn’t matter if the image is low in quality.
Please refer to your device manual for specific descriptions are the name of XP and LP differs in each manufacturer.

Recording Mode Recording Time (minutes)
XP
60 minutes
SP
120 minutes
LP
240 minutes
EP
360 minutes
*The mode may differ according to the model.

Q11. How can I print labels on the surface of the DVD?

A.
You can print on the label surface of the disks. Just use printers that have CD/DVD label makers, software, and DVDs that support inkjet printers. Please refer to your device manual on how to print the label.

Q12. Can I paste printed labels or labels with letters and drawings on the surface of the DVD?

A.
Please do not paste labels or protective sheets on to the surface of the disks as it may warp and affect the centroid. The DVD recorder/writer may not be able to play back as it will not recognize the disk. Glitches may occur with noise entering the images and sound.

Q1. What does 4x speed or 8x speed mean?
A.
The larger the number the faster the recording time which will reduce the writer recording time. For recorders with a built-in HDD, it will be faster to dub, initialize, and finalize on to the disk.

Q2. What is the present situation of DVD-R double (2x) speed?
A.
The standards are from 1x to 16x. The DVD-R recorder/writer can make recordings regardless of the recording speed of the DVD-R disk. (Please ask your manufacturer as the software may need to be updated.)

Q3. What is the present situation of DVD-RW double (2x) speed?
A.
It is mainly divided into two categories, 1double speed to 2 double speed (Ver.1.1) and 2 double speed to 6 double speed (Ver. 1.2).

Q4. Why is there an 18x writer on a 16x DVD-R disk?
A.
This refers to the performance margin (tolerance level) of the disk and writer for 16x standards. Generally there are restrictions in the combination of disks and writers that can be used. There are no regulations on the standards which are left to the writer manufacturers.

Q5. Why isn’t it possible to use the recording speed stated on the disk with a recorder/ writer?
A.
When your hardware (recorder/writer) does not support the recorded speed of the disk, the recording will be done in the fastest recording speed of the device. In this case, the recording cannot be done with recording speed stated on the disk. Also, the recorder/writer may support the recording speed on the disk but may make recordings on a slower speed as the quality of the recording takes priority.

Q1. Why isn’t the dual layer recording capacity (8.5 G) twice the capacity of one layer (4.7 G)?
A.
The capacity of dual layer disks for DVD-ROM (software for movies) is 8.5 GB. Therefore the dual layer DVD-R disks have the same capacity.

Q2. If DVD-R disk is dual layered, why isn’t DVD-RW disk dual layered as well?
A.
As of the end of 2006, the standards for DVD-RW dual layer disks are being debated. Technical development of disks has been launched by Victor Company of Japan. (Announced on April 4, 2005)
