The 5th Round Robin Test (hereinafter known as RRT) Taiwan Seminar was held in Taipei on February 21 (Thursday) by RWPPI (RW Products Promotion Initiative) in collaboration with the Taiwan Recording-Media Industries Association (hereinafter known as TRIA), and it was a huge success with approximately 50 attendees almost filling the venue.
The event was held at the Spring City Resort Hotel in the northern part of Taipei (in Peitou), and after the Representative of RWPPI, Mr. Aizawa, had given his opening speech at 10:00 am, the vice-president of Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (hereinafter known as ITRI,) Dr. Lee, and Mr. Yamamoto of Ongen Publishing Co., Ltd. gave guest speeches. Dr. Lee of ITRI said the superior levels of portability that is a main feature of DVDs and the emphasis on the importance of higher levels of recording and playback compatibility promoted by RWPPI's RRT activities are essential factors that need to be continued into the future for the benefit of users. Mr. Yamamoto gave a presentation on the collaboration established between Ongen Publishing and RWPPI.

The Secretary General, Mr. Morishita, then introduced RWPPI activities and the Secretary General of TRIA's business affairs, Mr. John Wu, introduced TRIA activities, followed with the announcement of the achievements gained through Stage 7 of the RRT.

At the beginning, the RRT head chairman, Mr. Ishii (Pioneer,) presented an overall summary of Stage 7 that was implemented this time. His report explained that tests covering 36 member manufacturers, 265 models and 369 items were implemented, and that the "mount check" stage was added to the tests this time for the first time. The first of the WG reports on success achieved was given by Physical Format WG chairman, Mr. Fujiki (JVC.) The report announced that tests were implemented on 8x DVD-R, 16x DVD-R, 16x DVD-RW DL (Dual Layer), and 8cm DVD-R DL discs this time, and that all were found to have high levels of performance and compatibility.

After the announcement of the achievement reports by the WGs, special lecturer Mr. Komatsu, president of BOC (Holdings) Ltd., gave a speech on the subject of future developments in the field of red DVDs, featuring current activities in the DVD business with regard to the development of new applications for DVD-Download, and HD recording media, etc. The seminar started at 10:00 am and continued through to 3:00 pm, with a break for lunch, and it turned out to be an extremely significant seminar.

The venue transferred to the ITRI campus in Hsinchu City on the following day (Feb. 22nd, Friday), where the Technical Meeting was held.
This meeting was held to provide an opportunity for engineers from Japan's hardware manufacturers to exchange information with Taiwan's media hardware engineers, and it was hosted by Mr. Owada from Sony, the Physical WG co-chairman, and Mr. Ogaki of Sony NEC Optiarc. Discussions were held after presentations by Mr. Sato of Yamaha, Mr. Utsumi from Pioneer, and Mr. Steve Ho from Optodisc Technologies. The meeting started at 1:00 pm and was extended by approximately thirty minutes past its scheduled 4:00 pm finishing time, and it provided the hardware and media engineers with the opportunity to engage in earnest discussions. Mr. Jay C. Liao of U-TECH Media provided his services as an interpreter between the Japanese and Chinese languages.
